Matilda Roles Information

Matilda Wormwood

- Female role (age 8-14)

Clever and wise far beyond her years. She has a thirst for learning that cannot be quenched. Likable and charismatic, not annoying or pretentious. Honest and unassuming, but with a prankster streak and a strong sense of justice. Must be a very strong singer and actress, equally. Strong dancing skills preferred but not required.

Miss Trunchbull

- Male or Female (age range 20s-50s)

- High baritone or II Soprano

Headmistress of Crunchem Hall, the tyrannical headmistress at Matilda's school who despises children. Portrayed as a female (clothing/makeup/hair). Trunchbull is a cruel and sadistic person. Above all, must be a strong actor with a good sense of physicality and characterization. Must also work well with kids. Strong singer and dancer preferred. Once a famous athlete, now described as a “gigantic Holy terror”.

Miss Honey

- Female (age range 20s-40s)

Adored by every child in her care, secretly Miss Trunchbull’s niece. Matilda's kindhearted teacher. She is tired of living in fear under Miss Trunchbull. Sweet, honest, caring, and intelligent, Miss Honey is timid but willing to become brave and stand up to bullies in order to protect her students. Must be a strong singer and actor who is very good at working with kids.

Mr. Wormwood

- Male (age range 20s-50’s)

- Vocal range approximately top A to F#

Dealer in second hand cars, a crook. Wormwood is Matilda's uncaring father. He is best described as - A slimy, greedy used-car salesman, unintentionally hilarious. Must be a VERY strong actor and comedian; improv and dance and movement skills needed for this physical characterization.

Mrs. Wormwood

- Female (age range 20s-60s)

- Strong belt voice approximately up to top F/G

Mother of Michael and Matilda, obsessed with amateur ballroom dancing. Mrs. Wormwood is Matilda's self-absorbed, negligent mother and an amateur ballroom dancer. Must be a VERY strong comedic/character actress, dancer, and singer able to carry off a sizable comedic role.

Mrs. Phelps

- Female (age range 20s-70s)

Encouraging local librarian who is Matilda’s confidant. No solos or Dance features. Acting role

Rudolpho

- Male (age range 20s-40s)

Mrs. Wormwood’s dance partner. Must be a strong social dancer, particularly with tango or other Latin dance experience.

Michael Wormwood

- Male (teens-20s)

Matilda's older brother. He is not very bright and favored by their parents. Needs good deadpan comedy and the ability to find a character during a lot of stage time with few words.

Doctor

- Male or Female (Age range 20s-60s)

- High tenor with a comfortable top A

Escapologist

- Male (age range 20s-50s)

- High lyric baritone

Acrobat

- Female (age range 20s-50s)

Wife of escapologist. Acts out Matilda’s story.

Bruce

- Male (age 8-13)

- Comic acting ability

Matilda's classmate. He is subject to punishment by Miss Trunchbull. Bruce is a genuine, kind boy with a fondness for sweets; his spirit is broken by the Trunchbull but he bounces back stronger than ever. Must be a very strong actor and singer with monologues, scenes, and solos. Strong vocal skills preferred, and voice hasn’t transitioned yet.

Lavender

- Female (age 8-14)

Matilda’s best friend. Fun and energetic. Strong singing and acting abilities, dancing is a plus.

Amanda

- Female (age 8-14)

- Strong dance and vocal ability

Alice

- Female (age 8-14)

- Strong and bold actress, strong dance and vocal ability

Hortensia

- Female (age 8-15)

- Feisty actress, strong dance and vocal ability

Eric

- Male (age 8-14)

- Smaller actor who moves well and sings

Nigel

- Male (age 8-14)

- Strong dance and vocal ability

Tommy
