Director’s Note

The last time RCT performed Seussical was in 2012. That is when the love affair with this show began. It is just as magical today as it was back then. Not only is it incredibly colorful and entertaining, but there are so many great life lessons embodied in the production. Dr. Seuss was a master at teaching us through his whimsical way of writing. Here are just a few treasures:

Everyone needs to “THINK BIG”. From our opening number to all the mischief that ensues throughout JoJo’s experiences, we are constantly challenged to not only think NEW but to also think BIG.

We all need to think outside of ourselves. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own day to day lives that we fail to pay attention to those “small voices” around us that are crying out for help. They may be subtle voices that are not readily heard. They may be those voices who feel ignored, helpless, unwanted or loved, abandoned, depressed, lonely, forgotten, poor, misunderstood and so on. But there are always opportunities for all of us to show more kindness and love by latching onto opportunities to help serve those in need. We just need to do it!

Both Horton and Gertrude show us that it is by serving others and staying true to ourselves that we are at our best. We can’t really reach out to help and serve others if we are too wrapped up in ourselves. Gertrude’s reckless attempt to gain the attention of others by changing her outward appearance and looks consumed her to the point of rendering her unable to help anyone else when they really needed it. She ultimately learns that her value does not come from her looks but her heart.

The Cat in the Hat reminds us throughout the show (in his own very unique way) that we really do have only two choices in how we handle difficult times in life. We can either complain or see the good that is ever present all around us and be grateful. As the Cat would say, “Things could be worse!” Gratitude or being thankful is something we can ALL benefit from and need to do more of.

So hopefully, you will take those few life lessons to heart and embrace them.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy and grow to love “Seussical” as much as I do. The entire “Seussical” company has been such a joy to work with. A gigantic “THANK YOU” to each and every one of them for being willing to share their talents and spend some time growing and creating and leaving their imprint on the community!! WELL DONE!! I have pushed and pushed them to shine and boy do they ever!!

I have also been blessed to work with an incredible production team whom without none of what you are seeing tonight would be happening. So THANK YOU to Makayla, Trever, Holly, Annabelle, Rick, Makaila, Jordan, Tim, Cody, Teya, Seth, Corin, Diana, Cami, Nate and all those who have helped in any way to make “Seussical” become such a memorable production ! You are all THE BEST!

Enjoy the show!

Ann

Cast

KC Davis – The Cat in the Hat

KC Davis is thrilled to unleash a little organized chaos as The Cat in the Hat in his third production with RCT. Previous roles include Robertson Ay in Mary Poppins and the delightfully grumpy legend himself, Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. KC loves theatre for the chance to spark a little joy in others and to dive headfirst into the beautiful madness of a live performance. He would like to thank his wife, Bailey, for letting him make a fool of himself in front of all her friends.

Emery Nelson – Jojo

Emery is so excited to play Jojo! This is her first musical, and she has had such a fun time! She personally knew Dr. Seuss in his lifetime (don’t look it up). Emery is a ballerina at Ballet Etude, where she’s been dancing for the past 3 years. She played the Baby Swan in their production of The Swan, and she can always be caught dancing. She loves her Seussical cast and she can’t wait for everyone to see the show!

Elijah Southfield – Horton the Elephant

Hello! Thank you for coming to see this wonderful production of Suessical! Elijah has been having a wonderful time bringing Horton the Elephant to life! Kevin Chamberlin, the original Horton, helped coach him on this role (this is definitely true, don’t look it up)! Elijah loves theatre so much so that he wants to make a career out of it. He has played roles such as Mercutio, Fyedka, Sam (Holes), Von Hussler, and the most important role of all… Footstool from Beauty and the Beast. Enjoy the show!!

Brynn Nelson – Gertrude McFuzz

Brynn is so excited to be in her fifth show with RCT as Gertrude Mcfuzz! She has been doing theatre since 2021 when she first played Lina Lamont in Singin’ in the Rain JR, and she has loved being on stage ever since. She co-wrote some of Seuss’ books, like The Grinch (don’t look it up). She loves her cast family so much and is so grateful for the love and joy they’ve brought into her life! Brynn loves her role because she thinks Gertrude is a very relatable character, and she hopes that her story can touch your heart the same way it touched hers!

Allison Burbidge – Mayzie La Bird

Allison is delighted to spread her wings as Mayzie La Bird once again, a role she first performed 12 years ago. Mayzie is charming, confident, and perhaps just a little self-centered, but her journey reminds us all about growth, responsibility, and friendship. Allison previously appeared as Desiree Devine in For Better or Wurst and has loved performing since her competitive theater days. She hopes audiences enjoy every feather-filled moment of this colorful story.

Holly Slack – Sour Kangaroo

Holly has been involved with RCT for the past 15 years as an actress and vocal director. She most recently appeared as the evil nanny, Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins last year. When not in the middle of a show, Holly can be found teaching 3rd grade, giving private voice lessons, and hanging out with her family.

Aria Swayze – Roo Kangeroo

Aria is bouncing with excitement to play Roo Kangaroo in Seussical the Musical! At 10 years old, she is thrilled to be making her first leap onto the Rexburg Community Theatre stage. She first discovered her love of performing with Act It Out Children’s Theatre, and previously appeared as Young Anastasia in Madison High School’s production of Anastasia. When she’s not hopping from rehearsal to rehearsal, she loves making friends, using her imagination, and having fun. One of her favorite parts of this adventure has been all the wonderful friends she’s made at RCT. She sends a big “Yopp!” to her castmates, family, and everyone who came to see the show.

Makayla Daybell – Mrs. Mayor

Makayla is so excited to be on stage! She was in Seussical last time RCT put on this show 12 years ago as a bird girl. It’s been decided that she is destined to wear orange in Seussical. :p She has been with RCT since 2011, and loves doing things on and off stage. She teaches, directs, and choreographs at a Children’s/Youth Theatre here in Rexburg Idaho with ‘The Rexburg Palace Conservatory’. Right now, she is directing RCT’s The Lion King JR. Theatre is her passion and loves doing it with her husband and son Oliver. She is excited that they get to share the stage together in this show. Enjoy the show!

Seth Daybell – Mr. Mayor

It has been a joy for Seth to do Seussical with his wife and son. Seth and Makayla met in an RCT production almost a decade ago now, and they love doing theatre together as a family.
Seth has served as the marketing manager for RCT since 2018, including managing RCT’s social media platforms and has loved capturing the joy of theatre through various photos and videos over the years.

Bryce Owen – General Genghis Kahn Schmitz

Bryce is excited to reprise the role of the General in Seussical! He has spent many years of his life in productions of Oliver, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, Oklahoma, Bye Bye Birdie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, HMS Pinafore, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Liken: The First Christmas.

Trevor Spackman – The Grinch

A lifelong musical theatre fanatic, Trevor cannot wait to help bring Seussical to life for his friends, his wife, and especially his two children, who will be watching him perform on stage for the first time! He is incredibly grateful to have worked with such an incredible cast and production team, where he has definitely made more than one “true friend in the universe.” Now, time to carve that roast beast!

Cardon Gray – Vlad Vladikoff the Eagle

Cardon has returned to Rexburg Community Theatre, making this his 3rd production with them!Cardon Gray was born in Colorado, was raised in New Hampshire and is currently studying at BYU-Idaho, which has included acting classes. Today he plays “Vlad” Vladikoff the Eagle, a bounty hunter-eque character paid to steal and get rid of Whoville. He loves science, wildlife, writing stories, and spending time with his friends and family!

Shelly – Thing 1

The ring leader. If anything interesting is happening, you can be sure she is in the middle of it. As previously seen in A Christmas Carol, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin.

Joss Meredith – Thing 2

Joss Meredith loves to do theatre! She has done 6 shows in 2 1/2 years. Her favorite role she played was X-ray in Holes! Her dream role is to play Ruffnut and Tuffnut in How To Train Your Dragon 🐉 with her cousin! Joss is the youngest of 5 siblings. She can’t wait to share this and many other shows with you!

Robert Hibbard – Yertle the Turtle

Robert Hibbard has been in or directed over 370 productions throughout his lifetime, but has never played a turtle! Order in the court! Enjoy the show!
